We Need a Veterans Memorial in Chapel Hill North Carolina

head> My title
Our memorial is now on the path to reality. The Town Council met on Monday, April 22, 2013, and approved the re-petition of our Veterans Memorial at Chapel Hill.  Many veterans and interested parties were there to support the proposal.

Russell Edmister and Jams Stallings of the Veterans of Foreign Wars C. V. Cummings Chapel Hill Post 9100 spoke on behalf of the many veterans and veterans' groups in our area.  Local media coverage of the meeting can be found on our News Stories page, located in the left column.  View stories

The photo on the right was taken as dusk falls on Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Local veterans from the Veterans of Foreign Wars C. V. Cummings Chapel Hill Post 9100 have just completed their carpeting of the cemetery for Memorial Day.  Members then gather to hold a remembrance memorial service.

Have you taken time reflect and to remember the sacrifices of our local citizen soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen?  It seems like one out of five graves contains a veteran.

There are privates, corporals, sergeants  sergeant majors, lieutenants, colonels and admirals laying side by side overlooking Fordham Blvd and US 15-501.

Taps often echo over the graves in a solemn call of honor and remembrance...

The VFW veterans, in concert with the veterans of American Legion Post 6, are working to help bring a veteran's memorial to the town of Chapel Hill.

Many drive by this beautiful site, but many do not stop and take a walk among the stones and markers. We invite you to view Veterans at Rest.  It is a short video of just one small section of the cemetery.  What strikes us most is the large number of veteran graves there.  There are many, many more in other areas.  Why not take a walk as the Veterans of Foreign Wars as they place flags on this small center section along Legion Road. Visit Veterans at Rest

Veterans at Rest

             Day is done,
gone the sun,
from the lakes
from the hills
from the sky,
all is well,
safely, rest,
God is near.
Fading light,
Dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky
Gleaming bright,
From afar,
Drawing, near,
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun
Neath the stars
Neath the sky,
As we go,
This, we, know,
God is near.
